Witzenhausen gallery presents “The Inner Eye”, a dialogue of two solo exhibitions by the American artist Michael Scott and the dutch artist Roland Schimmel. “The Inner Eye” at brings their work together for the first time.

Michael Scott (ny, b. 1958) and Roland Schimmel (nl, b. 1954) are two artists who, since the mid 1980's, have made paintings that have focused on the "optical" aspect of painting, but from different vantage points. Roland Schimmel's paintings and murals focus on the afterimage that results from their viewing, addressing the physical experience of viewing a painting before the analyzing of it can take over. In Roland Schimmel's work the physiological and the spiritual aspect of painting merge together. Michael Scott's work has at various times addressed the more extreme aspect of opticality by creating works that he has said in theory were intended to be impossible to look at. The artists met in 1990 and have maintained a friendship since.
