Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery presents Paper Lead Poem, an exhibition by Jason Tomme. This is Tomme's second exhibition with the gallery.

Paper Lead Poem focuses on two bodies of work both concerned with the "potential" of their respective materi- als. Inspired by the notion of the “blank slate,” Tomme uses paper and sheet lead as the basis for constructing paintings that exploit the physical nature of these elements. Treating each surface’s “blankness” as an asset, their opposing characteristics become building blocks for making paintings that are directly informed and shaped by the native qualities of their raw material.

In the first series of works, “Paper, Forms, Color,” shaped paper and spray paint are used to create monoprints that appear as painterly abstractions. Tomme considers these works to be “facsimiles,” as they are records of the physical process of production that resemble a photocopy of a three dimensional form. The second series of paintings, titled “Lead,” consists of monochromatic painted lead sheets. The varied treatment of the heavy, dense, toxic material finds beauty in its intentional dilapidation. Lead, in this context, emerges as both an antithetical and complimentary material to paper.

Paying homage to the poetic nature of the individual bodies of work and of their relationship to one another, he has included a poem that “captures,” in the artist’s words, “the general mood of working with these materi- als and their potential quality.”

Jason Tomme lives and works in New York City. He received his BFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2002), and his MFA from Yale University (2004). He has been an artist in residence at The Chinati Foundation, Marfa, TX (2008).
