This event has ended.

The Allan Stone Gallery presents Bay Area to New York, an exhibition featuring West Coast artists championed by Allan Stone in the 1960s and 1970s, such as Robert Arneson, Charles Ginnever, Gregory Kondos, Peter Vandenberg and Wayne Thiebaud. During that era, Allan Stone represented, exhibited, or voraciously collected these and other Bay Area artists’ works.

Whether it was the Bay Area figurative work, or the San Francisco Abstract Expressionist School, or Funk Ceramic Art, Allan Stone appreciated the West Coast artists’ gesture, hand, and their exuberance with their respective media. As a result, Stone gave several of these artists their first--or an early--New York City exhibition. He was an early supporter of these now well-known figures, exhibiting, selling and collecting the work.

Among the artists featured are Wayne Thiebaud who had his first New York show at the Allan Stone gallery in 1962, and has been represented by the Gallery for five decades. Through his association with Mr. Thiebaud, Stone began spending time on the West Coast, and was introduced to many of the artists whose work he showed at the gallery, and who are represented in the show. Arneson had his first New York show at the Allan Stone gallery in 1964, and was also represented by the gallery. Stone appreciated the direct, earthy and playful quality of Arneson’s work. Kondos exhibited at the gallery in 1968. Although Stone never represented Diebenkorn, he was an avid collector and dealer of Diebenkorn’s early work.
