In his own words, Dennis Tomkins says about art making: "Making art for me is an act with mysterious consequences. I think of my work as related to landscape but not in a literal sense. I often use the horizon line as a tool to lead me, and hopefully the viewer, down a path to the place that connects the two worlds -- reality and abstraction; the here and there, where alongside the visual reality exists a world of mystery and sense of the unknown."
