This event has ended.

In this special presentation by Lidwien van de Ven, the artist will screen her work Freedom of Expression and host related discussions considering issues of “Islamaphobia,” right-wing populist thinking in Europe, and the politics of immigration with invited guests. Van de Ven’s work focuses on the well-known political figure of Ayaan Hirsi Ali. The action takes place at a press conference in the European Union complex in Brussels where Hirsi Ali presents her case for E.U. protection against threats to her life. Freedom of Expression was commissioned by the Van Abbemuseum for Be(com)ing Dutch. Originally a video and photographic installation, the work has been re-imagined by van de Ven for presentation at the New Museum as part of Museum as Hub: Be(com)ing Dutch at a Distance.
