These new works demonstrate the artist’s continued commitment to the classical ideals of draftsmanship, technique and skill. Working directly from life, Sanders begins each new painting by creating a series of preparatory drawings and studies, familiarizing himself with the formal elements and nuanced subtleties of his subjects. The resulting paintings, carefully and deliberately rendered, reflect a remarkable level of detail, a sensitive understanding of form, color and line, and a quiet compositional balance.
