School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Layered,” an exhibition of painting and photography by students and alumni featuring works that employ a variety of approaches to picture-making. The exhibition is curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries.

Ashley Caputo’s photographic series Homemaking examines society’s stereotypical expectations for the domestic space with regard to women. The woman in these images creates a convincing home environment with cardboard figures and typical household toys. Preconditioned to live a happy and successful home life, she already knows what to think, feel, say and do before she meets these situations in reality. Caputo is a student in the MPS Art Therapy Department.

Na Rae Kim’s expressive oil paintings capture the spirit beneath the surface appearance of her subjects. Working quickly, her gestural broad-brushed surfaces blend Abstract Expressionism with Alice Neel-style portraiture. Kim is a 2009 graduate of the BFA Fine Arts Department.

Joseph Motroni’s large-scale photographs feature digital constructs intended to be representative of the various chain-stores that litter modern suburbia. These franchises are juxtaposed and stacked to form ominous towers hovering over the landscape. Motroni is a student in the MAT Art Education Department.

Paul Vogeler presents new large-scale oil paintings that express the artist’s personal investigation into his relationship with the nature of death, resurrection and limbo. The palette is distinctively dark, featuring images of birch forests, fluttering birds and World War I figures, all helping to evoke a feeling of a mysterious nighttime. The artist draws upon mythology and historical research as well as the poetry of Dante and Seamus Heaney. Vogeler is a 2009 graduate of the BFA Fine Arts Department.
