White Columns presents 'Image Image' the first solo exhibition by the New York-based artist Steven Baldi (b. 1983). Central to Baldi’s installation is a group of recent paintings that each incorporate an image of the Museum of Modern Art’s 1932 ‘Modern Architecture: International Exhibition’ catalog juxtaposed with painted versions of recent exhibition announcements from New York’s Miguel Abreu Gallery. Self-reflexively acknowledging painting’s multiple histories Baldi’s complex works incorporate strategies of reproduction and trompe l’oeil effects, whilst exploring questions of institutional hegemony and historical context, alongside formal and technical issues relating to process, production, appropriation and translation.
