Aperture Gallery

This event has ended.

Commemorating this month the fifteenth anniversary of the Rwandan genocide and coinciding with the exhibition and the publication of the Aperture book, Intended Consequences: Rwandan Children Born of Rape, photographs and interviews by Jonathan Torgovnik, Aperture Gallery presents a discussion between the artist; Melissa Robinson, Director of Educational Programming of the non-profit organization Kids for Tomorrow, and Rwandan women Marie Claudine Mukamabano, a genocide survivor, Rosette Burakari Adera, whose parents were Rwandan refugees and Yvette Rugasaguhunga.

Jonathan Torgovnik will discuss the origin and the spirit of this advocacy project which led him to create a foundation to support these women and children. He will share his experience with Melissa Robinson who worked for the Human Rights Education program at Amnesty International USA and is now the co-founder of Kids for Tomorrow, a non-profit organization that funds educational initiatives in the developing world. She is currently working on projects in Kenya and Cambodia.

During the event, three Rwandan women will read the testimonies from the women portrayed in the book: Rosette Burakari Adera, Marie Claudine Mukamabano, and Yvette Rugasaguhunga. An excerpt of the video produced by MediaStorm will be shown featuring the women themselves sharing their heart-wrenching stories.
