This event has ended.

An exhibition of provocative new sculpture by Colin Chase, – in which he conjoins symbols of heroism and mourning that “reflect our inhumanity to each other” to create thoughtful and soul-stirring works of art -- will open at the June Kelly Gallery on October 9. The works will remain on view through November 10.

In this exhibition, entitled Intersection, Chase uses common objects -- a trumpet, the American flag, umbrellas, for example -- that reverberate with meaning. The works, he says, explore “the meeting point or junction in each of our lives -- public/private, memorial/celebration – and set the tone for the viewer’s personal narrative to begin.”

A recurrent element are triangular flag boxes, which he says “are a significant icon and have always been part of our American lexicon of mourning.” The sculptures also allude to the ritual parades and celebration of mourning of the dead of New Orleans funerals.

“I expand this conversation to be both personal and national, simultaneously. In one sculpture, the trumpet is the axis,” says Chase, “but the horn is battered from playing too many parades, too many Taps.” He notes that the work arises from base that represents a burial flag case.

In the exhibition, Chase says he has aspired “to create quiet meditative poems about the effects of loss, war, and the malaise and fallout that result from our inhumanity to each other.”
