This event has ended.

Inspired by the pulse of Sao Paolo, Brazil, considered by many to be the current international center of graffiti, Ethos’ works are a sharp social commentary on urban life and its effect on society.

Graffiti can trace its roots as far back as the cave paintings and has existed scrawled in public places in the ancient world for thousands of years. As a form of raw, street expression it stands as a true, uncensored voice of a divided population that has been barred entry into the elitist world of art institutions. It exists as a rebellion against art at the institutional level. Ethos has intelligently and elegantly transitioned from the raw street work - his drawings have a contemporary yet classical feel – his freehand application finds its roots in graffiti while his iconography is more closely related to such movements as Romanticism and Mannerism. Inspired by the calligraphic styles of graffiti in São Paulo, Ethos uses these influences to lend a maturity of concept to his urban characters. There is an edgy feel to the works tempered by the delicate grace of their meticulous line work.

Ethos’ surreal figural transformations depict a future of changing roles - man becomes object and machine achieves humane qualities. It isn’t too difficult a stretch to identify with these transformed figures and their struggles - sometimes imagination isn’t far from reality.
