poster for Boris Torres "Recent Paintings"

This event has ended.

The Center presents the first New York solo show of Boris Torres, an emerging artist who’s work has been seen previously in group shows at Parlour Projects, Dumbo Arts Center, Rush Arts Gallery, The Center for Book Arts, Le Petit Versailles, and Art in General, as well as online in Butt magazine.

In this recent work, Torres has created two distinct series of paintings that together display his clear-eyed and compassionate approach to portraiture.

In Positive Paintings, six large-scale works of self-identified HIV positive men and women, Torres depicts how character comes from a variety of sources, including home, sexuality, health, love, and pride. While in What is Real and What is Not, a series of smaller works presented in the Campbell Soady Gallery, Torres layers violent images of Congolese women and children on top of idealistic, and mass produced, posters from horror movies, and Asian cinema, creating an unexpected, and jarring, conversation between the two.

As in all his work -- which in the past has included material both explicit and covert — Torres’s beautiful and compelling new paintings ask the viewer to question their own acceptance, or denial, of others most fundamental experience.
