Linda Stein "Sculpture--Strong Suit: Armor as Second Skin"
National Association of Women Artists
This event has ended.
WANNA FIGHT? Well, not so fast. Linda Stein’s armored Knights, albeit powerful and empowering, are meant as defensive bodyguards, not bullies and oppressors. The concept of Protection has permeated Linda Stein’s sculpture for the last three decades, culminating in
Knights, her sculptural series of body-as-armor. In her art, Stein references icons from spiritual and pop culture, especially the superhero, Wonder Woman from World War II comics, who excites Stein as the defending warrior who never killed in her pursuit of justice. Scrambling expectations of gender and strength, Stein’s
sculptures take on a commanding presence as they blend everyday materials and word fragments into larger-than- life torsos of wood, metal, stone, and with comic book variations on archival, acrylicized paper. These sculptures, either hung from the wall, free-standing, or wearable as the latest fashion statement, become heroic role models for our present time in history, when people are
searching for security through peace and equality.
Linda Stein is also showing at FLOMENHAFT GALLERY, CHELSEA: May 7 - June 20, 2009.
Also, on May 20th, 12-3 pm, Stein will be the Keynote Speaker at the 120th Anniversary Gala for NAWA at the National Arts Club in Manhattan, $50 Luncheon tickets: sgh35mm@comcast.net
