This event has ended.

Nove Scotia artist Sara MacCulloch's New Paintings consists of sixteen landscape paintings completed over the past year from places near where the artist lives on the East Coast and Ontario, as well as the fields and trees of the Cotswolds in England where she visited this past Spring.

Sara MacCulloch's work focuses on rendering places as familiar, not particular, simplifying it as far as she can to capture the "feeling of space". MacCulloch works in the wet, and after watercolor and graphite studies are complete, the paintings are completed in a single block of time. She may make several goes at the work but the final painting results from a single episode. This process brings a rough hewn earnestness to the work that relies on a deft hand and well trained instincts, but the craft is not flaunted. The viewer does not dawdle long with technique before slipping into the emotional lull of color, paint and form. Sara MacCulloch's quiet landscapes pack a painterly, abstract, punch; pushing the paint to be as descriptive as possible with less instead of more. Stripped to the bare bones, the artist's landscapes are at once raw, calm and dynamic.
