Sali Taylor "Make Over"

This event has ended.
Who is the modern day Venus? What does she look like? Or perhaps, more importantly, what does she wear?
In Sali Taylor’s montages, images of contemporary fashion models, female iconography, and art history merge, creating an outburst of cultural representation to last throughout the ages. Beneath the schizophrenic identities cloaked in various garb remains the idea of a woman who is just as much a product of the times as the times are a product of her sense of self. Signs of beauty conflate, revealing history’s visual lexicon of womanhood.
Juxtaposing Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” with our own beauty pageants and contemporary runways, Taylor’s hybrids make us reassess the present through the lens of the past. “Becoming Venus and Cycladic Series are a mischievous merging of high art and pop culture whose intention is to comment on an ever-changing “feminine” aesthetic,” states Taylor. Mixing humor with the hodgepodge of our own reflection, Taylor’s figures give us the levity to laugh but also the foresight to contemplate the next step.
