Matt Keegan "New Windows"

D'Amelio Gallery

This event has ended.

Domestic spaces are presented in various configurations from the comforting and sun-drenched to the disconcerting and precarious. Six photo-collages entitled "New Windows" feature images taken in an apartment in New York’s Lower East Side where Keegan previously resided. A photograph embedded into the gallery wall and a painting contributed by a friend of the artist, Richard Aldrich, define the space and emphasize the fragile membrane that delineates the interior from the exterior.

Over-building and construction saturation has plagued Keegan's current neighborhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and the neighboring Williamsburg and Long Island City, Queens. The artist wonders: What will come of these various spaces? How will they eventually merge with the needs of future residents, or be reclaimed for alternate purposes? This show poses no answers, but considers these locations in constant states of flux.

The free-standing text piece "Field of Dreams," meets viewers at the entrance of the Front Room. It references the 1989 film of the same name released during the last big financial recession. In this movie, Kevin Costner's character is haunted by a voice that plainly states: "If you build it, he will come." Keegan plays on this phrasing and responds, "Who are they, and when are they coming?"

A free offset-printed booklet in an edition of 500 will be available at the gallery.
