"By a Thread" Exhibition
Elizabeth Harris Gallery
This event has ended.
This exhibition features a group of artists who coalesce as a group literally "by a thread." Mike Asente has incorporated mechanical and manuel embroidery creating explosions on a non-woven, non fusible interfacing. Mary Carlson takes disturbing and violent images of blood splat and neutralizes them through crocheting– she uses copper thread because of its permanence. Elisa D'Arrigo's cloth and paper constructions are obsessively hand-stitched accretions that appear animated from within. Lesley Dill considers what it means to be human through weaving. Elana Herzog challenges the architecture of the gallery with an installation of a faux column covered in her trademark usage of staples and fabric residue. Holly Miller uses thread as drawing element in her monochromatic paintings. Edward Shalala captures "accidents" with shavings of raw canvas and documents his outdoor thread installations in NYC parks and grasslands. Ann Shostrom combines formalist abstraction and handmade craft, using household linens that are dyed, bleached, printed, painted, embroidered, and sewn together.
