This event has ended.

Ippodo Gallery New York will present the works of a Korean female ceramicist, Park Young Sook. She is known world-wide as the creator of large, milky-white procelain ”Moon Jars.” From the beginnings of the Chosun (or Joseon) Dynasty 500 years ago until the early 20th century, Moon Jars were a national treasure in Korea, favored by the noble classes and a hallmark of the quality of Korean art throughout the world. Lost during the Korean War, the art of the Moon Jar was reborn at the hands of the artist. Ms. Park also brings her exceptional talents, passion for her art and love of experimentation to the creation of a variety of tableware. She once created an English-style tea set for Queen Elizabeth II of England, and now in 2009, she is presenting tea wares that draw on Japanese tradition. Ippodo gallery’s exhibit is the world premier of her new style of Japanese tea utensil. This exhibition highlights her latest experminents with color. Ms. Park’s works feaure Shinsha (辰砂), a deep vermillion which many other ceramic masters have sought, but failed to achieve. With his experienced insight, the principal American correspondant for Asian Art Newspaper Mr. Martin Lorber said ”Her forms cannot be pinned down as being Korean, Japanese or Chinese in inspiration. There is a happy independence from categorization.” Ms. Park’s style is modern with a taste of tradion. Her bowls and dishes are extremely delicate with a fine finish. They are done in the manner of Japanese tea utensils; however, her skills, accumulated over more than 30 years, enabled her most recent works to have a style that is not constrained by a particular fashion.
