Alejandro Mazón presents a collection of work that is rich in symbolism and Old World iconography. Through the overlapping of cultures, the artist emphasizes the struggle of cultural integration and the search for personal identity. In each piece, there is a sense of isolation and fragmentation as the artist’s subjects attempt to cope and adapt to the world happening around them. A pantomime of subscripts resonates throughout Mazón’s collection, and, in many ways, the art mimics the artist. Born in Cuba, Mazón’s family migrated to Spain, then to the United States. His experiences are as much a part of his art as his paint is.

The use of Nature plays a primary role in Alejandro Mazón’s collection as both a backdrop and a utensil. He expresses this through the use of oils and colored pencils, which create contrast and definition in each piece. Spanish-influenced red and yellow checkering blends with the more loosely painted green and blue hues of the tropics. The use of more modern metallic paints and holographic paper alongside the use of vintage wallpaper reinforces the point that blending is as much a part of history as it is of the future. Integrating rope as a medium, Mazón demonstrates how these themes can quite literally be tied together. “There is a point between past and present, old and new, baroque and modern, which I am always striving to capture.”

Alejandro Mazón lives and works in New York City and has shown at both the New York and Los Angeles George Billis Galleries.
