Walter Randel Gallery announces the opening of its Summer Group Exhibition highlighting painting, sculpture and photography created by a diverse group of contemporary artists. The vibrant mélange of current works filling the gallery is punctuated by European, Asian and Ethnographic works of art dating from 2500 BC through the mid-18th century, proving the Gallery’s distinctive proposition that art of the past keeps very good company with its present-day counterparts. The show’s unexpected visual juxtapositions heighten the appeal of the contemporary works but also significantly enliven the gallery visitor’s overall experience. A certain artistic intuition at play subtly orchestrates our sensory response. Karl Mann’s individualistic assemblages lie at the nexus of the exhibition for their combination of sculptural and painterly elements. Little Noa Noa, Mann’s homage to Gauguin is a magical mixed media assemblage encased in a wooden shadow box. Comprised of collages, painting, printed calligraphy on Japanese rice paper and found objects, this distinctive work successfully bridge the gap between two- and three-dimensionality and hence form a conceptual bridge with sculptures by Noa Bornstein and Peter Mallo, the paintings of Josef Levi, Mavis Smith and Jamie Titus, as well as the photographs of Lucien Clergue and Toulinov & Bowie in this show.
