This event has ended.

Gallery 138 presents Rwanda Mon Amour, a trans-media exhibition featuring drawings and sculptural installations by Brookie Maxwell, and video work by Jesse Hawkes, director of the Rwandan theater-based program, RAPSIDA. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide. Inspired by the courage of the Rwandan people to heal and progress, Rwanda Mon Amour addresses the roots, repercussions and reparations of genocide.

At this pivotal moment in history, America is redefining its relationship to basic constructs such as money and violence. In the words of President Obama, “we have chosen perceived safety over our ideals”, embracing collective unconsciousness and greed. As the repercussions of the Rwandan genocide are manifested in the Congo, Rwanda Mon Amour illuminates the human potential for positive change.

Facing History in Ourselves, an international organization dedicated to teaching tolerance and preventing human rights violations is sponsoring and directing workshops for New York City teachers and their students at Gallery 138 during the exhibition.
