Steve Butcher "Assumptions of Scale"
Spring
This event has ended.
A postcard is a reproduction of all, or part of an artwork. Once the original has been viewed, the relationship with the piece can be kept alive with the postcard serving as a reminder - the most affordable, immediate and accessible way of holding on to an artwork.
Directly following on from a series of postcard sized work, Steve Butcher continues to look into the viewer/postcard relationship. Using the fresco work by Giotto as a pictorial source, he has selected details that, once isolated, not only now possess their own composition - but also completely distance the new image from the subject matter and purpose of the original fresco. The border is not only a dynamic meeting of color against clean white, but functions in containing the image as well as the viewers eye.
