Gerald Monroe "Recent Painting"
Michael Steinberg Fine Art
This event has ended.
Michael Steinberg Fine Arts presents an exhibition of recent paintings by Gerald Monroe. This is Monroe’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Although there have been changes in his imagery - the point of departure for these recent works IS photographs of foliage - Monroe’s commitment to modernism has not changed. Monroe considers the act of painting a negotiation between observation and invention, from the real world to the more real (the painting surface), from the chaos of nature to a well-constructed picture. Though the final imagery may be more or less referential to the motif of foliage, Monroe’s reinterpretation of it on the canvas is a fresh and original image, a renewed experience.
A review of his 2005 show in The New York Times described Monroe as “boldest as a colorist” praising his “deft paintings” for their “dignity and restraint.” The New Yorker called attention to Monroe’s “leaf-in-bloom, sunlight-and-shadow motifs.”
Gerald Monroe has been a professional artist for over half a century. Gallery director Michael Steinberg, who has known and admired his work for more than 30 years, says that Monroe’s long-term dedication to his personal vision is inspiring and refreshing. At the age of 82, Monroe is at the top of his form.
