This event has ended.

KUMUKUMU presents its first project show, “Pink Panther”, organized by Amy Smith-Stewart with Hannah Dumes and Nicole O’Rourke. For the next four months, KUMUKUMU will invite external curators and galleries to present experimental exhibitions in its space. “Pink Panther” will be the first exhibition for Smith-Stewart in a series of roving gallery shows. The exhibition features work by twenty artists that explores the diverse and divergent meanings associated with the color pink.

Spanning painting, sculpture, works on paper and video, the exhibition mulls this color’s problematic status and specifically why it’s so powerful that feminists and other marginalized groups have reclaimed it alike. The show functions like a puzzle, offering up a multitude of clues or proposals about its polarizing nature. Taken as a whole the show attempts to tell us why this color is overloaded with historical implication, stereotypical connotation and running clichés.
