Dick Swift "Candid Portraits of Celebrities from the 1960s and 1970s"
Soho Photo Gallery
This event has ended.
Dick Swift has photographed the very famous and the merely famous, from American heroes and Hollywood notables to icons of the photography world, during the course of his career; 36 of his portraits will be on display. They’ll include: Martin Luther King Jr., W. Eugene Smith, Cornell Capa, Dustin Hoffman, Judy Garland and 31 others. Swift, who was one of the original members of Soho Photo Gallery when it was founded in 1971, says, “My photography is usually unobtrusive and non-confrontational, my objective being to capture a brief moment of recognition and empathy. Design and content are of
equal importance. When both occur in the same frame, then there is magic. Photographing is a solemn process, as is the viewing and interpretation of one’s images. When images conjure up new ideas and relationships, or satisfy old ones...when they cause reflection,
introspection, and produce a smile...they accomplish their mission.” Swift’s work has appeared in numerous galleries and museums including the Center for Creative Photography, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Witkin Gallery (NYC), The Photographer’s Gallery (London) and the Eastman Kodak Gallery among others.
