Iranian culture defines itself through a strategy of long-term resistance and in the Islamic Republic, contemporaneity is thus characterized by suspension and a state of tension. The resulting art uses humor as a trenchant tool; it is this very tautness in society and psyche that makes for a rich and fertile artistic expression, nurtured rather than stifled or limited by the underlying contradictions.
