This event has ended.

Walter Strach’s way of working is to sit down on the floor in the back of his van, painting directly from the motif. To an extent, this isolates him; he does not intrude into the landscape he is painting. The van is parked in different spots on the long driveway, so that this nature Strach sees is always adjacent to the imposed road. The land there is in the process of returning to dense woods one hundred years after it was actively farmed.

The show will feature extended horizontal works, acting like abbreviated Chinese scroll paintings. Strach’s long horizontals are not like commemorative Chinese works showing a pilgrimage, but are part of his recent emphasis, his new painterly language. The journey here is going from the domestic to the edge of the natural.
