This event has ended.

This presentation is premised on the idea that history resumed in 1989 with an intensity that qualifies Eastern Europe as a sort of “history simulator”. Alongside the production of history, 1989 brought about a reinvention of the public space, reduced to the mere locus of propaganda and surveillance during the communist decades.

Curator Mihnea Mircan, currently resident with the International Studio & Curatorial Program, will provide an inciting presentation of a series of artistic positions relevant for the history of 1989 and their context, aiming at offering a perspective on the two interspersed trajectories of history and public space. Examples of works by Deimantas Narkevicius, Irina Botea, Zbynek Baladran, Vlad Nanca et al. will follow, looking in particular at conflict in the public space and its most visible manifestation: the monument. The monument is viewed as the site of ongoing ideological confrontations: while the monuments of modernism were toppled by communism, the latter’s traces in public space are now systematically replaced by the insignia of democratic power.

The discussion will be moderated by Corina Şuteu, with the participation of curator & gallerist Mihai Pop and visual artist Cristian Rusu (both present with Plan B Gallery at the Armory Show).
