Rink Foto "SAN FRANCISCO: The Making of a Queer Mecca"

Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art

This event has ended.

Leslie/Lohman Gallery presents SAN FRANCISCO: The Making of a Queer Mecca a new exhibition of the early work of San Francisco’s most notorious queer photographer, Rink Foto. Friend and photographer of Harvey Milk, Robert Mapplethorpe and Andy Warhol, Rink seems to have a gift for being there at the right moment, not only to catch the action but also to capture the image that is rich enough, dense enough, and strange enough to tell a complex story without words. Curated by Julia Haas with the assistance of Jonathan David Katz, this exhibition is comprised of but a fraction of Rink’s near half-million photographs chronicling the transformation of San Francisco into the epicenter of the gay and lesbian movement in the 1970s. The exhibition will also feature several rarely-seen photographs taken by Harvey Milk.

The exhibition is supplemented by a screening of The Cockettes, the award-winning 2002 cult-documentary about the eponymous, gender-blurring performance group that became a symbol of queer San Francisco in the early 1970s. A short film by Jenni Olsen, 575 Castro Street will precede the feature. The screening will take place September 29, 2009 at 6pm at the Leslie/Lohman Gallery. Cockettes co-director David Weissman will be present for a Q&A after the film.
