Mark Lawrence Stafford "Work"

Bronx Blue Bedroom Project

This event has ended.

Mark’s intention is to capitalize on how abstracted, over-reaching and consequently, deteriorated Conceptual Art’s influence and reputation has become in the visual arts. His new body of work addresses these issues by developing a series of utopian workstations under the branding of “Consolidated Creativity”. The brand offers a diversification of products such as the “big boy”, the “Sunday Painter”, and the “Painter’s Pulpit”. These designs, prototypes, temporal instructions and performances upon commission, appropriate some of the strategies of commercialism and design, insisting upon the positive impact that consumer products can bring to our lives. He creates analogies between art as product, and art practice as marketing device. However, in this work it is the process that becomes the art and therefore what is emphasized over of the final product. It is his point to demonstrate the impossibility of thinking of art within the sphere of the production line— and therefore the fallacy of the analogy Art equals Work.

Through this personal exploration, the problem raised by art soon proves itself to be conceptual and philosophical and not practical. However, its visual materiality disrupts the equation.
