This event has ended.

"Floating a Boulder" is the first exhibition to focus on the works of Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Jim Hodges and the interrelations between the art and lives of these two prominent artists. Meditating upon both the intersection between the personal and the political, everyday life and the singular event, Gonzalez-Torres and Hodges worked across a variety of media to create works of conceptual rigor that nevertheless remained grounded in a sense of universal humanity. Gonzalez-Torres transformed ordinary objects into emotive relics with references to love, death, and politics. Utilizing materials such as bead curtains, strands of light bulbs, piles of candy, paper stacks, mirrors, wall clocks, and jigsaw puzzles, the works combine an aesthetic allure both minimal and expressive with the gravitas of the subject matter. Hodges shares a similar sensibility and approach to his work. His photographs, light bulb sculptures, mirrors, chain spider webs, and scarves, conjure notions of the passages of time, love, and mortality through rich imagery, skilled craftsmanship, and implementations of color and light. Both artists imbue everyday objects with a emotions and experiences, inviting the viewer to activate and engage the work.
