This event has ended.

Gabriel Phipps' work is proof that simplification can be anything but simple. Relying on a relatively spare set of aesthetic givens—rough, blocky forms and a restricted palette of colors—these paintings provide remarkable food for aesthetic thought. This new exhibition features recent work that continues and deepens the artist's exploration of an abstracted visual language that regularly threatens to fracture of any fixed set of interpretive categories placed upon it. Phipps' paintings evoke a series of densely-layered references, as their repeated forms call to mind everything from the elements, to cellular life, to figures, cityscapes, topographies and computer screens. These simultaneous references hover on or near the picture plane, charging the works with a deep psychological tension, a reflection of the viewer's own presence before the canvas.
