This event has ended.

Yvonne Thomas is one of the most lyrical painters to emerge from the Abstract Expressionist era. Hallmarks of her remarkable oeuvre include freshness and spontaneity of mark-making, an exquisite color sensibility, and shimmering tonalities. Thomas’ forms cavort across the picture plane, playfully jostling and nudging one another while creating a pleasurable abstract dynamism.

As a student of Hofmann and later a colleague of Motherwell, Rothko, and Newman, Thomas reveled in the freedom and power of an abstract idiom that allowed her gifts as a painter to flourish. The paintings in this exhibition all date from the mid-1950s, a period of maturity and potency for Thomas and the American art scene. These works stand at the vanguard of post-war Modern painting, and retain a sense of power and excitement that is found in important art of any era. Yvonne Thomas has created a legacy of beauty and revolution. These 1950s paintings anchor the core of her achievement and place her in the front ranks of a generation of artists that defined the Abstract Expressionist movement.
