Eli Ping "Full Bleed"
Susan Inglett Gallery
This event has ended.
Eli Ping makes work which challenges the accepted notion of painting and sculpture. Exploring both formal and material conventions, Ping's sculpture exhibits properties of both mediums. Wrapped and twisted canvas coated with hundreds of layers of pigmented glassy resin transforms the abstract expressionist gesture into three dimensions. Color and movement combine to become action sculpture. Conversely, paintings assume the mantle of sculpture. Monochromatic surfaces are built up by layering canvas and thick impasto paint, then carved and gouged to create dimensional reliefs. Colorful wall works evoke arrested, expressionistic brushstrokes, expanding painting into the third dimension. Ping's dissolution of the distinction between painting and sculpture reveals a fertile terrain, lush with possibility and promise.
