This event has ended.

Holga Inspire will feature the works of ten internationally renowned photographers Michelle Bates, Susan Bowen, David Burnett, Tammy Cromer-Campbell, Taiju Fubuki, Teru Kuwayama, Pauline St. Denis, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Harvey Stein and Rebecca Tolk, all of whom work extensively with the Holga camera. Widely published and exhibited, these esteemed artists represent the Holga Inspire initiative – to present diverse and extraordinary works using the unassuming plastic camera.

First developed and manufactured in 1982 by T.M. Lee, the Holga camera supplied a large marketplace with a simple and very inexpensive camera. The camera’s body and lens, made entirely of plastic, is extremely low-tech and equipped with traditional negative film. The low-tech aspect is inherently riddled with unpredictable outcome, which when combined with a creative approach can produce unique and ethereal effects. Low tech becomes high art. The often lyrical quality of imagery quickly gained popularity during the 80’s and 90’s. And it still remains a viable and refreshing alternative to the digital mainstream.

In conjunction with Holga Inspire, a Holga Workshop designed for basic as well as advanced use of the camera is scheduled at Umbrella Arts for Saturday, January 16, 2010. Registration is limited. For more workshop information and registration please visit the gallery online.
