Thornton Willis "lattice paintings"
Elizabeth Harris Gallery
This event has ended.
During the early 60's Thornton produced his iconic Start paintings, working on the floor and creating all over energized fields of glowing stripes. In the early 1970's and 80's, he re-investigated the linear yet now drawn in quality of intertwining fields of colored space, producing paintings that ambiguously balanced form and field. The lattice painting unite an open-ended dialogue between form and field, minimalism and gesture, proving the authenticity of personal choice. Possibly the strongest work to date, these paintings are dynamic, bold, and demanding of the viewer. The simple shield like appearance of these special objects belie the thoughtful tuning of space, color and form; the sensitive edges, overlays and traces of painterly decision, the weighted and expressive colored passages that have come to be the hallmark of this influential painter.
