Yana Dimitrova, a New York-based Bulgarian painter, will be the speaker on the timely topic:"New Power- Contemporary Young Artists from the Former Eastern Europe." In the past twenty years, artists from post-communist countries have fully embraced the newly-established artistic tendencies. A large number of young artists from that region are now creating installations, mixed media and conceptual-based works. Dealing with existential and universal issues, they all seem to gravitate to themes touching on history and the environment.

The discussion will address current socio-political, market and historical influences in the works of the new generation of Eastern European Artists.How does the recent Communist past inform the work of these young artists? Has the market completely directed the new production of art or has the freedom of expression propelled it towards a new revolution?

For this talk, we are pleased to have special guests with experience in the region, Peter Ferko of Artists Unite and Wendy Newton, Senior Program Officer for Trust for Mutual Understanding. Peter will moderate the discussion.
