This event has ended.

The Edward Thorp Gallery will present a selection of 100 works on paper, focusing on the expressive power and immediacy that the material allows. The show will include drawings, prints and photography. They will be drawn from the early 20th century onwards from both European and American artists, providing examples of some of the major movements.

The exhibition will encompass differing artistic motivations and associations with topics such as, authenticity, subjectivity, history, memory and narrative. The juxtaposition of mediums will further illustrate a complexity of approach.

As a basic tool for the artist, the simplicity and purity of the sheet of paper can facilitate the most immediate form of image making but also act as a support for a more mediated or at times meticulous approach. For some they can be preparatory studies for larger, more complex works; for others they represent their principal medium. Works on paper have the capacity to be both personal and subversive, inviting the viewer through the intimacy of subject matter and the often directness of the execution.
