"Zalmaï" Artist Talk and Book Signing
Aperture Gallery
This event has ended.
Aperture presents a talk with internationally renowned photographer and former Afghan refugee Zalmaï, to discuss the work from his latest book Silent Exodus: Portraits of Iraqi Refugees in Exile (Aperture/UNHCR). Over the course of several trips made to Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon in 2007, with the support of Human Rights Watch, Zalmaï chronicled the plight of Iraqi refugee families, collecting their individual stories, and photographing them in their homes, where many remain in uncertainty. Although faced with dwindling resources and increasing hardships, these refugees are still afraid to return home, given the instability and violence that lingers in Iraq. Poignant yet powerful, Zalmaï's photographs reflect his ability to connect with his subjects on a very personal level and bring a rarely told and important story to a wider audience.
