This event has ended.

In his first solo exhibition at the gallery, del Rosario will be showing eleven paintings, oil on canvas and panel, ranging from small 12” x 12” to an impressively large 40” x 72”. In an exciting departure, del Rosario will present two large triptychs, created expressly for "Bread and Circus," one over six feet in length.

Del Rosario meticulously paints curious, diminutive figures reminiscent of India miniatures or Dutch 17th century genre painting. The process begins with drawings of single or groups of figures who later become the characters for his paintings. Drawing from a background in theatre, del Rosario places his figures on a flat stage-like plane with no clear delineation of perspective. The composition may be of a room, or an exterior, though not defined; the viewer intuits the intended boundaries.

Del Rosario paints a fascinating web of stories, subtle, strange, puzzling, revealing power plays, conflict, and events perhaps beginning or ending. Iconographic figures, statically staged create an edgy scene of outrageously dressed, expressionless figures, not reacting to the bizarre tumult surrounding them. Sorting out the antagonist, and protagonist, a challenging ambiguity plays out leaving the viewer to decode the artist’s intent.
