In previous work, Carolyn Martin used the image of the white picket fence as a way to challenge the insularity of American domesticity. In these spare new drawings, the picket fences become less solid and more linear, entwined with flowing lines suggesting captured organic forms. The
crossbars, ruled in pencil, underpin the architecture that we forever want to impose on nature. For Martin, the fence is an image with many meanings. “Fences can represent borders, exclusion, protection and security, that guarantee a degree of freedom. They are a sign of prosperity and wealth as well. They go back in history to the earliest human civilizations. They can seem both benevolent and menacing.”
