"After Before and After" features five of Nils Folke Anderson's "reciprocally linked" sculptures, works in which minimal square frame elements are linked together and arranged to make complex and beautiful 3-dimensional environments. Made of recyclable expanded polystyrene, the work conveys a sense of great scale combined with lightness and play. The artist uses the term reciprocal linkage to describe the principle of interdependency embodied in the works. Each of the sculptures is exactly alike in size, material and construction; however the works are infinitely adaptable and are configured by the artist into unique works.
Anderson is interested in the shaping of space through the interplay of sculptural form and human movement, and his installations occur in direct engagement with architecture and landscape.
The recent opening of the High Line has created a fresh and dynamic social space, in which the neighboring buildings and cityscape are seen anew. Once visible only from indoors, the galleries of Phillips de Pury & Company, which for years have presented the highest level of Contemporary Art, now welcome the gaze of thousands of passersby.
“After Before and After” Anderson says, “refers to a process of engagement in which elements interact with one another in constant flux, and linearity circles back on itself, confounding cause and effect and creating endless near repetitions and evolutions.”
Similarly, the High Line retains its industrial past, its spontaneous plantings, its openness to the air, and offers these as part of a model for the future, so that what came before and what comes after blend together and build upon each other. In this context, After Before and After initiates an exchange between the sculpture, the gallery, the surrounding architecture, and viewers both on the High Line and in the gallery itself.
