This event has ended.

“Turn On” presents works with the theme of sexuality; it questions what makes an artwork erotic and examines the sometimes-obscure line between art and pornography.

Some issues that “Turn On” addresses: If an artwork is sexual in its theme, how does that effect the perception of it? Does it make it less valuable or “bad art”? How do you look at and read a graphically sexual artwork beyond its shocking effect? How do you decide “Is it porn or art”? Is it harder to take an erotic or pornographic work seriously, because the content might override the aesthetic reading of it? Is it easier or more acceptable for a painting, drawing or a sculpture to deal with sexual subjects than it is for photography, video, film and new-media art? Why is sex still in fact a sensitive and taboo subject in the art world?

Art, by definition, is about looking, watching—and sometimes being voyeuristic. Taking that as a point of departure, “Turn On” investigates the power of art as being intellectually stimulating while simultaneously being sexually titillating. For some people, the exhibition may be a total mental turn on—a mind fuck—and others may be physically aroused by what they feel or see. Still others may be repelled and simply turned off. In any case, viewers will be given an opportunity to learn about the relationship of their own sexual psyche to the pieces in the show.
