Shirley Clarke Film Program
Anthology Film Archives
This event has ended.
Among the leading lights of the New American Cinema Group and one of the founders of the Film-Makers' Cooperative, filmmaker Shirley Clarke was at the very heart of the underground film movement that erupted in the late-50s and early-60s. Though best-known today for her Living Theatre adaptation, THE CONNECTION, and the cinéma vérité classic, PORTRAIT OF JASON, these films are only the tip of the iceberg of Clarke's eclectic body of work. Her career saw her moving from dance films and other experimental shorts, to more conventional documentaries, and on to the feature films that were to prove so influential. Always determined to explore new directions, she ultimately embraced the new medium of video, founding the collaborative Teepee Video Space Troupe and creating a number of later works out of her home and studio in the Chelsea Hotel.
