This event has ended.

Jil Evans’ work, The Galapagos Cactus Wars, highlights the relationship between metamorphosis in nature and art. Can evolutionary biology provide a full account of our values or must we also take into account the respects in which our powers of imagination are fundamental to creating and recognizing values? Her work on metamorphosis depicts the emergence of forms abstracted from her study of the natural world, hinting at moments when natural change seem altogether random and without significance, and when emerging, new forms seem to suggest a meaningful narrative that echoes our violent, humorous and vulnerable world. Like Baeumler, Evans contends that the creative imagination plays an indispensable role in our care for, and understanding of, the natural world.

Evans’ work has been the subject of twenty solo exhibitions, including T he Painting Center in New York and Franz Bader Gallery in Washington, D.C. She has received numerous awards and residencies including the Minnesota State Arts Board, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and the American Academy in Rome. Evans received her MFA in painting from Stanford University.
