In her third solo exhibition at I-20 gallery, Sherry Wong will showcase a series of group portraits on paper featuring members of the creative communities in San Francisco.
The series was inspired by the artist’s introductory experience with the city’s strong collective urge and feature members of the city’s underground culture, highlighting Wong’s interest in group dynamics and social cohesion. Play All was originally conceived as part of Wong’s residency at Cellspace. Working in the manner of a court painter, her portraits are highly posed with symbols of each particular group’s status in society. Featured groups and individuals include the DJ collective Brass Tax, San Francisco community group the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the band Live Evil, rapper MC Frontalot, and DJ collective Strategik.
