This event has ended.

A Chinese artist living and working in New York, Kuo is known for his lush and thought-provoking abstract ceramic vessels. Kuo’s paintings, with their bold contrasts of vibrant color expand on the conceptual forms in his three-dimensional clay work.

As a young graduate student Shida Kuo came to New York City from Taiwan. Freed from the traditionalist culture of the East, Kuo was quickly influenced by the New York City culture in which change is encouraged and prized. Kuo began to explore and experiment with offbeat forms, and materials, combining the new ideas with old techniques. Kuo’s sculpture is a fine balance between ancient techniques and contemporary aesthetics.

Kuo brings an unexpected depth and complexity to his clean lined paintings. Abstract yet somehow familiar, Kuo’s shapes are delineated in black over fathomless backgrounds seemingly lit from within. A limited palate intensifies the surprising textures Kuo mixes into his pigment. Like his sculpture, Kuo uses the subtle tensions between space and line to create a stunning impact.

Like his two-dimensional work, Kuo’s sculpture is refined and meticulous; minimalist clay forms grown from unconscious memory, mirror the abstractions of his paintings. The muted tones and soft surfaces, transition seamlessly into wood and metal. Constructed by hand, painted and polished in subdued black and creamy white tones, his work is sensually executed, serious, yet at times, provocative and playful.
