Do These Become You? is an exhibition of new work by Lucy Hodgson featuring sculpture and original etchings. Hodgson’s wry wit is apparent in both the titles in the show as well as the oddly anthropomorphic quality of the work. Here the viewer finds a humorous and unexpected animation of materials that is both curious and unsettling.
On view at SOHO20 are two large works by the artist titled “Happy Landings” and “Wave of the Future”, both acting as host to an array of materials including cedar shingles, plywood, metal piping and various bits of trash. Teetering between the familiar and unknown, Hodgson’s work employs the architectural and organic to spur an absurd tangent of forms hung in space and suspended in time.
Also included in the show are original prints and the etched aluminum plates from which they were pulled. Once printed, the plate is simultaneously destroyed and reinvented as a new object, hinging on Hodgson’s preoccupation with the impermanent nature of the work.
