This event has ended.

Tilton Gallery presents an exhibition of new works by German painter Simone Lucas. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition at the Tilton Gallery.

Born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1973, Lucas studied with the renowned figurative painter and teacher Dieter Krieg at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. “Simone Lucas’s paintings employ an artistic double strategy: her paintings are both effusive demonstrations of painting’s technical possibilities and precisely calculated analyses of their respective visual effectiveness. (1). That sense of a painting's dual nature, simultaneously a physical fact and referencing the theatrics and the psychological resonance of illusion, is at the heart of Lucas’ work.

In this exhibition, Lucas uses reflective surfaces, doubling, masked figures, ambiguous and abstract settings and an intensified depiction of everyday objects and experience as astute commentary on visual perception. The artist revisits some familiar themes: the terrifying moment of unknowingness at the school blackboard or the blank canvas, and the female form on display, yet she does so with a new clarity and formal invention that underscores her painterly bravura.
