This event has ended.

Born in Chile and exposed to the harsh rule of the military dictator Pinochet, much of San Martin’s work addresses the tragic violence and persecution of civilians that occurred under his rule from 1973 to 1990. Taking this as her primary subject, San Martin works to express her reactions to the political upheaval in her home country in expressionistic strokes that make her work singular and disparate from conventional approaches of politically characterized artists. San Martin chooses to work almost exclusively in paint and torn canvases that lend themselves to experimentation with new techniques and contempt for boundaries in her work. She encourages the public that “expression is always open to interpretation.”

San Martin’s previous work is held in the collection of the Contemporary Art Museum of Santiago, Chile as well as numerous private collections in Chile, Spain, Germany and the United States. Her work has been featured in The New York Times.
